What is IMRCS ?

IMRCS stands for ‘Intercollegiate Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons.
’
Membership of one of the surgical Royal Colleges of Great Britain and Ireland is open to surgeons who have passed all parts of the Intercollegiate Membership examination and meet the criteria set.

The examination syllabus, format and content, are common to all four colleges. The examinations are held separately by each College at the same time of year in Great Britain and Ireland, but at different times overseas, with the exception of the Part 1 and Part 2, which are held at approximately the same time worldwide.
How many parts are there in the IMRCS examination?
The examination is in three parts:

Part 1 - Applied Basic Sciences (ABS). It consists of Single Best Answer and Multiple True False questions only. The examination lasts for 3 hours.

Part 2 - Clinical Problem-Solving (CPS). It consists of Extended Matching questions only. The examination lasts for 3 hours.

Part 3 - This part consists of two separate components, the Oral Component and the Clinical Component. Candidate must take both components with the same College.

Each part stands alone and candidates are awarded either a “pass” or a“fail”.

Candidates may enter Parts 1 and 2 in any order. Part 1 may be entered at any time after gaining an acceptable primary medical qualification. They may sit each Part with a different College.

Candidates may resit Parts 1 and 2 repeatedly. However, candidates should note that they will have 3½ years in which to complete all parts of the examination dating from their first attempt at Part 2. This regulation applies even if they choose to sit Part 2 before Part 1.

How do I apply for parts 1 and 2?
You need to fill in an application form and bring it to the British Council in Agouza OR Alexandria before the registration deadline.

Requirements for registeration:

Part 1: Completed application form, primary medical qualification PLUS 2 signed and stamped photos

Part 2: Completed application form, primary medical qualification, approval of one year internship PLUS 2 signed and stamped

Re-sit candidates: completed application plus a copy of their result letter

Please note that all signatures, stamps and certificates should be in English



Where can I sit the examination?
Either in Cairo or in Alexandria

How much does it cost?
The examination fee is £190 OR L.E.2185. Fees may be paid by sterling bank draft or in cash in Egyptian pounds.

How do I know if I am eligible to take the examination?
Overseas candidates must hold a primary medical qualification that is acceptable to the Councils of the four Colleges; (prospective candidates who wish to check the acceptability of their medical degree should check the World Health Organisation’s list of medical schools.

Candidates may enter for Part 1 at any time after gaining their primary medical qualification, however they are strongly recommended to be in Basic Surgical Training (BST) before entering Part 1 of the examination. Candidates must have commenced BST before entering Parts 2 and 3 of the examination. [Note: BST is defined as surgical training undertaken after a primary medical degree.]

All first-time applications for Parts 2 and 3 must be accompanied by evidence of having entered basic surgical training (the trainee’s consultant’s signature, accompanied by the relevant hospital’s stamp, on the relevant section of the application form for Part 2 is sufficient evidence of this).

IMRCS Part 3:

How do I apply for part 3?
You need to fill in an application form and bring it to the British Council in Agouza, Alexandria before the registration deadline.

Requirements for registration
If you passed parts 1 & 2 with The Royal College of Surgeons of England, you should submit an application form, 2 signed and stamped photos plus a copy of your passing letters for parts 1 & 2

If you passed parts 1 & 2 with another College, you should submit an application form, 2 signed and stamped photos, original passing letters for parts 1 & 2 plus your primary medical qualification.

How many components does part 3 consist of?
Part 3 of the IMRCS consists of two components: the oral and the clinical.

The oral component is a knowledge-based part comprising of three individual question and answer sessions each lasting 20 minutes.

The clinical component is in two parts: a mixture of 'short cases' and a test of communication skills.

Candidates must pass the oral component before proceeding to the clinical component.







How much does it cost?
The examination fee for part 3 is as follows:

Oral, Clinical & Communication Skills: £490 OR L.E.5, 635

Clinical & Communication only (& Clinical only): £270 OR L.E.3, 105 (for candidates who passed the Oral and are registering to for the Clinical and Communication part only)

Communication only: £150 OR L.E.1, 725 (for candidates who passed the Oral and Clinical are registering to for the Communication part only)

Fees may be paid by sterling bank draft in favour of the British Council OR in cash in Egyptian pounds.

Refund & Postponement Policy

Before the closing date, candidates will be given a refund less 10% being the British Council’s local fees. After closing date, candidates should claim for refund or for postponement directly from the Royal College of Surgeons.
