Postoperative pyrexia
Common problem after surgery.
Detection of the cause depends on:
§ Time since operation.
§ Type of surgery.(especially pelvic surgery, prolonged surgery, ppt factors.)
§ Associated clinical features. (see above, assessment of postop. patient)
Time since surgery: as specific complicationsoccur at certain timing
§ First 24 hrs:
1. Systemic inflammatory response.
2. Preexisting infection.
§ 24 to 72hrs:
1. Pulmonary atelectasis.
2. Chest infection.
§ 3 to 7 days:
1. Chest infection.
2. Wound infection.
3. Intraperitoneal sepsis.
4. Urinary tract infection (UTI).
5. Anastomotic leak.
§ 7 to 10 days:
DVT or pulmonary embolism.
